Covenant Faculty

Covenant has been blessed with teachers who are committed to the Lord and are gifted in teaching.  They love children, are passionate about teaching, and are bright and knowledgeable in their respective fields.

Grammar School Faculty Debra Soehren - Kindergarten
Mrs. Soehren has an Associate Degree in Child Development and a Bachelor's Degree in Organizational Management with a minor in Economics from Illinois State University.  She has completed all course work towards her Master's Degree in Teaching, with a Language Arts Endorsement, from Trinity International University.  Mrs. Soehren has twenty-three years of experience teaching at the pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and lower grammar school levels.  She and her husband are members of First Baptist Church in Wheaton, where she has taught Sunday School for many years and currently serves as a deaconess.   
Cassandra Kline - First Grade
Miss Kline has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana Wesleyan University with a minor in Spanish and an ESL Endorsement from National Louis University. She taught Kindergarten and ESL classes for three years at Clifford Johnson Elementary School in Warrenville, where she also previously served as an assistant reading teacher for two years. She also taught Spanish to pre-school students at Crème de la Crème Early Learning Center.  Miss Kline attends Harvest Bible Chapel in Naperville.

Kimberly Sceggel – Second Grade
Mrs. Sceggel has a Master’s Degree in Integrated Curriculum and Instruction from Covenant College in Georgia and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Gordon College in Massachusetts.  She has over twenty-five years of experience teaching at the grammar school level in Christian schools.  During the past six years, she taught in a classical school and assisted in curriculum development and teacher training.  Mrs. Sceggel and her family attend Bethel Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, where she serves as the Sunday School Superintendent.


Alyssa Clements - Third Grade
Mrs. Clements has a B.A. in English Literature, with a minor in History, from Wheaton College. She has completed all course work for her Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education from Wheaton College and completed her student teaching in a 4th grade class at a Carol Stream school.  Mrs. Clements served as a teacher’s aide in 3rd grade in a Glen Ellyn school, and tutored 1st and 2nd grade students in a Wheaton school.  Mrs. Clements attends First Baptist Church of Wheaton where she serves in the middle school ministry. Sarah Burlingame - Fourth Grade
Mrs. Burlingame has a Bachelor's Degree in English and a Master's Degree in Education from Wheaton College.  She served as a Teacher's Assistant in the English department at Wheaton College, taught abroad during a short term mission trip, and has five years of classical teaching experience.  Mrs. Burlingame and her husband are members of Grace Church of DuPage in Warrenville, where for the past three years she has been regularly teaching in Children's Church.

Lorraine Egolf - Fifth Grade
Miss Egolf has a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, with a minor in Literature, from The King’s College in New York City. She taught preschool for five years at The Geneva School of Manhattan, where she also served as the school’s lead preschool teacher, responsible for curriculum development and training of new teachers. Miss Egolf has also volunteered for the past three years for Operation Exodus Inner City, a ministry providing educational services for disadvantaged children, where she tutored children and developed the Bible curriculum.   

Valerie Bromenschenkel- Grammar Latin
Mrs. Bromenschenkel has a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of North Carolina, where she also minored in Latin.  She also holds Master’s Degrees in Educational Leadership and in Youth Ministry from National Louis University and Huntington University, respectively.  She has over 9 years of experience teaching English and Latin at the high school level.  She and her family attend Alleluia Lutheran Church in Naperville, where she also has 11 years of experience working with children as the Middle School and Children’s Ministry Director.

 Katrina Combs - Curriculum Development
Mrs. Combs has a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in Philosophy and History from Wheaton College and a Master’s Degree in Philosophy of History from Olivet Nazarene University.  She has over seven years of classical teaching experience in the areas of Latin, logic, humanities, and debate. She has also worked in the areas of curriculum and teacher development , and has worked closely with students ranging from the 3rd grade through the college level.  Mrs. Combs is highly-skilled in the area of classical, Christian pedagogy.  In addition, she has three years of experience serving as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Trinity Christian College.  Mrs. Combs and her husband have two young sons and attend Christ the King Church in Batavia.

 Logic & Rhetoric School Faculty

Connie Blair - Mathematics and Science
Miss Blair has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University and worked as an engineer in the environmental services industry for 12 years.  She has two years of experience as a full-time professional math and physical sciences tutor for middle school, high school, and college students in the Naperville area.  She is passionate about teaching math and science from a conceptual basis and from a historical context.  Miss Blair currently attends Church of the Resurrection in Wheaton. Laura DeSoto - Science
Mrs. DeSoto has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Wheaton College and is pursuing her Master’s Degree in Christian Formation Ministries.  She has ten years of experience teaching Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences at the Upper School level, including five years of classical teaching experience.   Mrs. DeSoto and her family attend River Glen Presbyterian Church in Naperville, where she serves in various ministries, including the evangelism team, the homeless outreach ministry, and children's church. Matthew Farrelly - Bible, Logic
Mr. Farrelly has a Bachelor's Degree in Christian Thought from Grove City College and a Master's Degree in Biblical Exegesis from Wheaton College.  He has six years of classical teaching experience.  Mr. Farrelly is a member of the Church of the Resurrection, where he is active in the men's ministry. Rachel LoCascio - Humanities
Mrs. LoCascio has a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Leeds, UK and a Master's Degree in English Literature from the University of Victoria, British Columbia. She was a Graduate Exchange Scholar in the Department of English at the University of Illinois and also completed doctoral work as part of a University Fellowship in the School of Speech at Northwestern University. Mrs. LoCascio and her husband have four children and are members of The Orchard church in Wheaton Christina Mearse -  Mathematics
Mrs. Mearse has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, with a major in Mathematics, from Oklahoma Christian University.  She taught mathematics at the junior high level for five years in Oklahoma public schools, served as a missionary in Japan teaching English for one year, and has four years of classical teaching experience.  Mrs. Mearse and her husband have three children and are members of the Naperville Church of Christ, where Mr. Mearse serves as the Youth Pastor.

Emily Phillips - Mathematics
Mrs. Phillips has a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics  from Wheaton College, where she served as the co-captain for both the track team and the cheerleading squad.  She has completed all of her coursework towards her Master's Degree in Education from Wheaton College and has served as a Teacher's Assistant in the Mathematics department at Wheaton College.  Mrs. Phillips has one year of classical teaching experience and she has also tutored high school students in courses ranging from Algebra 1 through Calculus.  She and her husband currently attend Wheaton Bible Church.     Ryan Gregornik - History

Mr. Gregornik has a B.A. in History and a B.A. in Spanish from Wheaton College, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a recipient of the Scholastic Honor Society Scholarship.  He also holds a M.A. in History from the University of Alabama, where he worked as a graduate teaching assistant.  Mr. Gregornik has taught Spanish and Bible and coached girls' varsity basketball and junior varsity soccer.  He has also worked as a youth camp counselor at the Lake Geneva Youth Camp and Wheaton College's HoneyRock Camp.  

Ryan Spice - Latin
Mr. Spice has a Bachelor's Degree in Ancient Languages from Wheaton College. He lived in Israel during his high school years and is fluent in Hebrew.  He has served as an office assistant in the Foreign Languages Department at Wheaton College and has tutored both high school and college students in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.  Mr. Spice has a three years of classical teaching experience.  He and his wife attend Wheaton Bible Church and have been involved in short-term missions trips, the most recent being to Indonesia.
Deb Wieland – English
Mrs. Wieland has a Master of Arts in Teaching from National Louis University and over eight years of experience in teaching Language Arts and Social Studies in area schools and two years of classical teaching experience.  Prior to pursuing her passion for teaching, she received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois and worked for several years in the corporate world.  Mrs. Wieland, her husband, and daughter attend Suburban Life Community Church in Darien, where they are all members of the worship team.

Fine Arts Faculty Elizabeth Fuzak – Grammar and Logic School Art
Mrs. Fuzak has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University.  She has seven years of teaching experience at the grammar school level in area public schools and ten years of homeschooling experience.  She has two years of classical teaching experience. Mrs. Fuzak has also served as the Children’s Director and led the Drama Ministry and Creative Team at The Sanctuary in Bolingbrook, where she and her family are members. Hannah Wood - Music 
Miss Wood earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Moody Bible Institute and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Northern Illinois University.  She also has an Orff Certification from the Vander Cook College of Music in Chicago.  Her teaching experience includes over 9 years as a general music and choir instructor and 10 years of experience as a private music instructor for piano, voice, and violin.  She spent several years teaching at the International Christian School of Budapest in Hungary, where she also established and conducted a flourishing middle school hand chime choir.  Miss Wood attends Christ Community Church in DeKalb where she also serves as the KidZone Coordinator.

Mrs. Phinney received her Bachelor's degree in Business Marketing from the University of Idaho and has worked in retail sales and management at both full-time and part-time capacities for over 20 years. In addition to raising her own four children, three of whom currently attend Covenant, she has cared for children as a toddler Sunday school teacher or nursery coordinator for 13 years. She and her family currently attend Faith Bridge Church in West Chicago where she currently serves as a toddler Sunday school teacher.
